Whenever a farmer sows seed, he first plows the field turning it over and softening it thereby preparing the soil.

In a similar way, the field of our hearts must also be plowed first before planting the gospel seed. This is done to expose our sins, so that we may realize our need for salvation. If we don't yet appreciate the gravity of our sins, then God’s Law also has the purpose of teaching us that failure to keep the Law constitutes a mortal sin. So when our sins are thus exposed, it becomes clear that we will be condemned and destroyed for our sins without Jesus.

(Romans 3:20, 6:23, Galatians 3:24-25)

When ours hearts are plowed, once we kneel before the Law of God, admit our sins and realize that we were destined for hell inherently, we will then surely surrender to God, believe in the gospel of the water and the Spirit, be saved and unite with God’s Church.

But to achieve this, our Lord first had to bear all the sins of this world onto His own body through the baptism He received from John the Baptist and be crucified in order to save the human race from all its sins. This He did over 2000 years ago, so that we could become the beloved children of God. (John 3:5)
